Mafia Island Marine Park is one of Tanzania’s most spectacular protected marine areas. Established in 1995, it covers coral reefs, mangroves, lagoons, and coastal forests, protecting one of the richest marine ecosystems in the Indian Ocean.
The park is home to over 400 species of fish, sea turtles, dolphins, humpback whales (seasonal), and the famous whale sharks that visit between October and March.
The conservation fee helps protect coral reefs, marine life, and local communities. It supports sustainable tourism, environmental monitoring, and conservation programs that keep Mafia Island beautiful for future generations.
If you are staying in Utende or Chole, you are inside the Marine Park zone. All foreign visitors are required to pay a conservation fee.
| Visitor Type | Fee | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign Non-Residents | $24 USD per person | Per night |
This fee is typically collected at your lodge or by Marine Park authorities. Payment may be required in cash or via official park payment methods.
Visitors staying outside the Marine Park zone (e.g., Kilindoni) are generally not required to pay the overnight conservation fee unless entering the Marine Park for activities.
